A new roof is the biggest single thing you can do to protect a house, and it is a job you want doing once. We re-roof in natural slate, slate-effect tile, concrete interlocking tile and clay tile across West Yorkshire, and every new roof we fit carries a 25-year workmanship guarantee in writing.
What a re-roof from us includes
- Scaffold to the whole roof, with debris netting where the property fronts a pavement.
- Strip the old covering and dispose of it. We check every rafter and replace anything that is rotten.
- Breathable membrane across the whole roof so the loft can breathe and condensation does not build up.
- Treated battens at the right gauge for the slate or tile, fixed with the right nails.
- New slates or tiles, laid to the manufacturer’s specification, with ventilation at the eaves and ridge.
- Dry ridge and dry verge systems where the roof suits them, so there is no mortar to crack and fall out.
- New lead at chimneys, abutments and valleys, hand-dressed and in the correct code of lead for the detail.
- Fascias, soffits and gutters replaced or refitted if you want them doing at the same time, which is the cheapest time to do it.
- A tidy site every day and a clean roof and gutters when we leave.
Natural slate, slate-effect or concrete tile?
Natural slate is the right material for most stone and brick period houses in Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield. It is thin, light and lasts a century. We use good Spanish or Welsh slate, graded and sorted before it goes on.
Slate-effect tiles give the look of slate on roofs where the pitch is too shallow for real slate, or where budget matters. They are quick to lay and carry long manufacturer guarantees.
Concrete interlocking tiles are what most semis built from the 1950s onwards were designed for. Replacing like for like keeps the weight right for the roof structure and keeps the cost sensible.
If you are not sure, we bring samples when we quote and talk you through the differences for your roof.
Reclaimed slate and tile
On many older roofs the slates are fine and it is the nails and battens that have failed. We can strip the roof, sort the slates, re-lay the good ones on new battens and membrane and make up the shortfall with matching reclaimed material. It keeps the look of the house and costs less than all-new slate. Because the material is reused, we guarantee reclaimed re-roofs for 15 years rather than 25.
